Nurse Practitioner Enriches the Lives of Dementia Patients
Ashley Lautar brings her expertise and heart to Dementia Care and Education Campus.
Ashley Lautar grew up around a community that embodied passion and selflessness.
Being raised around a family of nurses motivated her to become a nurse practitioner herself.
When the time came to return to Arizona, she knew at first glance that Hospice of the Valley would be the place for her.
“Oh my gosh, this is such a rewarding career,” Lautar stated. “I really do love my job. Not a lot of people get to say that.”
While days spent with dementia patients and families can present a unique opportunity, Lautar would not change a single second. She thrives on the possibility of enriching the lives of people with dementia, all while lending a helping hand to caregivers in need.
“What brings me joy in my day-to-day work is just seeing the relief on the faces of family members, and those living with dementia, when I’m in their home and helping troubleshoot or navigate the difficult pathway that dementia can throw at them.”
Hospice of the Valley’s Dementia Care and Education Campus has allowed Lautar to overcome her negative stigma surrounding the disease. Her position allows her to be innovative and creative in her approach to care and education.
“I think the more people learn about dementia and learn that people who have dementia can have wonderful, beautiful lives, the less scary it is.”
Lautar is involved in the free educational courses provided to the community at the campus. She leads a “Dementia Moments” simulation that reinforces compassion and patience, strengthening families and caregivers.
The campus is a learning opportunity for both students and volunteers. “We especially love our student-volunteers. So if anyone has an interest, we welcome them with open arms.”
