The holidays don’t have to be perfect to be meaningful. For a person living with dementia, the most important part of the celebration may simply be feeling comfortable, included and connected. A little planning can help reduce stress and create an experience everyone can enjoy.
6 Tips for a More Comfortable Holiday
Plan around their routine: Choose times when your loved one is usually most alert and comfortable. A daytime gathering may work better than an evening celebration. Keep activities simple and consider asking family or friends to help with meals, shopping or caregiving.
Make safety a priority: Before guests arrive, clear clutter and loose rugs, keep stairs and walkways free, use nightlights and secure medications and potentially harmful household products. Consider a fireplace guard or battery-operated candles for added safety.
Prepare your guests: Remind visitors to speak directly to your loved one and allow extra time for responses. If repetitive questions or unexpected behaviors occur, stay calm. Rather than correcting or arguing, acknowledge their feelings, offer reassurance and gently redirect their attention.
Focus on familiar traditions: Favorite music, family photographs, books and simple holiday traditions can spark connection and pleasant memories. Quiet, one-on-one activities may be especially meaningful. Watch for signs of fatigue and allow time for breaks or rest.
Keep mealtimes simple: Offer familiar foods, small portions and frequent snacks. Finger foods and pre-cut foods can encourage independence. A smaller group and quieter setting may make meals more enjoyable.
Remember the caregiver: Perhaps the most important question is: “How am I doing?” Give yourself permission to simplify traditions and let go of unrealistic expectations. Can someone else prepare a meal, host the gathering, shop, provide respite or help with caregiving? Remember that simplifying the holidays is not giving up; it is making room for what matters most. Accept offers of help, prioritize rest and nutrition, stay connected with supportive people and consider respite services when needed.
The Gift of Being Present
Your time, attention and caring presence may be the most meaningful gift of all. By slowing down, staying flexible and focusing on comfort and connection, families can create moments that truly matter.
